Some years back, I remember listening to a finance professional talk about how Trailers should not be purchased because they do not go up in value. Back then, I had no knowledge of Trailers. It seemed to make sense. But then I was able to purchase a Trailer of my own. So would I do it again?
Let’s go back about 25 years. I was aspiring to be a young professional. This was before the technology era became a part of daily life. I had to go through the old-fashioned process of getting pre-approved for a loan product. Back then this meant providing copies of utility bills to prove that I paid my bills on time. If you’re from my generation, or older, then you’ll know what I’m talking about. This process was not instant. Rather, it was a long process with no guarantee for approval.
Anyway, back then I had found a lovely farmhouse on what used to be the outskirts of the city. It was built in the 1930’s. And many houses had been built around it. That area which used to be rural turned into the suburbs likely by the 1960’s. However, there was my little farmhouse…surrounded by more modern houses.
I toured the home. The little house had all of the old school architectural features I loved. It was a well-built home and perfect for me and my dogs. I put in a bid. Unfortunately, I was outbid by a couple who offered $1,000 more. Then what?
A couple of years later, the very same couple put the house on the market. I went back and toured it again. Every feature that I loved like the original cast iron sinks were replaced with contractor-grade updates. It was fine but did not have that polished look that I loved so much on the original home tour. The asking price was beyond my finances. For me, this is when my home ownership dream started to fade. I was no longer able to afford the dream to buy a home.
Fast forward several years later and my home I live in today became available. I was very fortunate to have been able to get connected to this Trailer. Although this is a home likely produced on an assembly line and does not have the vintage features I truly appreciate in permanent structures, it has been a wonderful home for me.
What about that finance guy that said “don’t buy a Trailer”. I don’t pay him any mind anymore. It all depends on circumstances. If a Trailer is the best option right now in life then go for it! I know my Trailer may not be beautiful and it might look to some like a place to get out of…it’s been a great home for me and I’m still happy to have it. I hope to be able to do the kinds of projects I want in the future. But time will tell!
